Tibet — The Newest DXCC?

Momentum is fast growing in the Eleven Metre Freeband Community for the Chinese state of Tibet to be recognised as the latest DXCC entity.
‘11m DX Activities Oz’ understands that motions have been put to both the World Wide Radio Organisation (WWRO) and creators of the DXCC Division list more than 20 years ago, Alfa Tango, to have the small plateau region in Central Asia inducted into the DXCC ranks on the grounds of it being an independent ‘Political Entity’ with ‘indigenous peoples’.

In recent weeks, the Chinese Communist Party's brutality against Tibetan people has attracted worldwide attention and condemnation, particularly in Australia where the Olympic Torch relay has been overshadowed by violent protests.

Since China invaded an ‘independent’ Tibet in 1949, one-fifth of the country's population, are said to have died or been killed as a result of China's policies. Many more have languished in prisons and labour camps and more than 6,000 monasteries, temples and other cultural and historic buildings have been destroyed and their contents pillaged.

Essentially, the DXCC rules state that “Political Entities are those areas which are separated by reason of government or political division. Furthermore, they “generally contain an indigenous population which is not predominantly composed of military or scientific personnel."

Given Tibet satisfies both DXCC criteria, it’s more of a case of “when” the decision is handed down rather than “if”. The million dollar question is whether or not 11m decision makers Alfa Tango or the WWRO will wait for the judgment to be made in the Ham Community or demonstrate leadership nous themselves and make the move first.
